Three Oaks - The Hippest Town in Michigan is Perfect For a Romantic Weekend Getaway

Just 10 minutes from the shore, this once sleepy little town (which still brags about a visit from a president -- McKinley!) has sudden gotten hip.

The Village's Main Drag, Elm Street, now has many new art galleries, antique shops, food spots and there's even a yoga studio close by.

It's still a bit under the radar, but it won't be for very long.

Great Shopping Adventures

The French Twist (9 S. Elm Street) has a collection of edgy casual wear that is worth a look.

Then be sure to visit Springdale (19 S. Elm St.) for home goods from the 1930's and 40's and it's sister store, Ipso Facto (1 W. Ash St.) which has a wonderful collection of architectural oddities and quirky Americana.

Where to Eat

Be sure to get a California-style organic lunch at Belle Via Market and Cafe or enjoy a "proper English Tea" at Viola (11 S. and 102 N. Elm respectively.)

For dinner, make a reservation at the delightful Mesa Luna (13 S. Elm, again) and order the sauteed veal or many other regional favorites.

What to See

The Three Oaks Library (yes, the Library) - which has a collection of vintage bicycles dating back to 1860. You can also rent a bike (a new one) for the day.

In the evening, check out the outdoor silent film festival at the Vickers Theatre (6 N. You-Know-Where) or listen to jazz and Swing at the Acorn Theater (107 Generations Dr.)

Where to Stay

If you book early enough, you can get one of the rooms at the 100+ year old fully restored Victorian Treasure House (210 S. Elm St.) But there are only 3 rooms so book really early.
